26 Oct León Cathedral (León)
The year 916 was really significant for the history of León’s Cathedral: the King Ordoño II, who had ascended the throne of this city a few months before, defeated the Arabs in the battle of San Esteban de Gormaz. “Thankful to God for the benefit I had just received”, tells this man from Tuy. He handed over his royal palace so that the first cathedral-like temple was erected in its halls. It all happened under the episcopate of Fruminio II, who, “helped by the faithful people”, transformed those rooms into a sacred place. Before the King Ordoño, this spot had been occupied by thermal baths and other public buildings built by the Legio VII around the middle of the 2nd century, when this legion set up camp in this place, between the rivers entre Torío and Bernesga.
